Here is what you normally don’t expect from Apple. Every time someone from the jailbreak community finds an exploit and release a new jailbreak, the company simply patches it in a software update without talking about it. But now it seems a little change in their attitude.
Apple has released a document that show detail of all the vulnerabilities that are being patched in the iOS 5.1 firmware. The document credits all the people who have found these exploits. Pod2g and the Dream Team are given credit for finding these holes.
This is what the support document says:
Kernel
Available for: iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation) and later, iPad, iPad 2
Impact: A malicious program could bypass sandbox restrictions
Description: A logic issue existed in the handling of debug system calls. This may allow a malicious program to gain code execution in other programs with the same user privileges.CVE-ID
CVE-2012-0643 : 2012 iOS Jailbreak Dream Team
VPN
Available for: iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation) and later, iPad, iPad 2
Impact: A maliciously crafted system configuration file may lead to arbitrary code execution with system privileges
Description: A format string vulnerability existed in the handling of racoon configuration files.
CVE-ID
CVE-2012-0646 : pod2g
No doubt the untethered 5.0.1 jailbreak was a huge task specially for the A5 based devices nicely done by Pod2g and the dream team, a group of jailbreakers MuscleNerd, PlanetBeing and P0sixninja.
Although Apple has fixed the vulnerability but a lot of jailbreakers are not updating their devices to enjoy the untethered jailbreak on 5.0.1.
The document also contains other vulnerabilities found by different security researchers. You may say that they are encouraging hackers by acknowledging them but in fact they are helping them find more exploits and making their operating system more secure than ever.
