iOS JailBreaker Comex Answers Your Questions Before He Joins Apple & Leave Jailbreaking

by casey on September 2, 2011

We have already covered a story on iPhone hacker Comex being hired by Apple. You must be thinking about his future involvement in the jailbreak community. Obviously an Apple employee will not be giving you jailbreak tools. Comex answers to all your questions in a discussion on Reddit. He is of course leaving the jailbreak community.Check out the following answers by the iPad 2jailbreaker.

Question: After your internship with Apple and after iOS 5 is officially released, will you continue to support the jailbreak community by providing exploits?
comex: No.
Edit: But I’ll want to jailbreak my phone, so I hope someone finds them :p

Question: Have you made any money from the jb scene?
comex: I’ve made a good amount of money through donations, which is mostly being used to help pay for college. JailbreakMe 2.0 was like $40,000; 3.0 was $15,000 (not quite sure why it decreased). There’s no point in keeping it secret.

Question: Congratulations on your new position. Why an intern position though? It seems like you could carry a regular position at apple.
Comex: I don’t know if I’d want to do that- I’ve never had a job before and I don’t know what it’s like- and I intend to go back to college soon.

Question: How has the core jailbreak dev teams responded to you going to work for apple?
comex: Mostly with congratulations.

Question: Have you met Steve Jobs?
comex: I wish.

Question: The jailbreak community took a huge hit when you left. Do you think the active players can outsmart you now that you’re playing for the other team, or are you Apple’s final solution to their jailbreak problem?
comex: There are a lot of smart people working for Apple already; maybe I can help, but I doubt I can stop people from finding exploits.

Question: Can you give any insight on how apple views the Jailbreak communities mods?
comex: I have no idea.

Question: I love when they say things like that. They are basically a bunch of lemmings. As great as Apple is in some respects, they think way too highly of themselves- “whatever you need to do with your computer/iphone we’ve already thought of. It’s not possible that this 3rd party app is useful to you. Get rid of it. If it wasn’t made by us then it’s going to RUIN YOUR PHONE, DON’T DO IT! STAY AWAY!”
comex: Probably because they see a disproportionate number of cases where there is some problem and the owner doesn’t know enough to fix it by himself…

Question: As a huge open book for them to steal take ideas from.
comex: I certainly don’t mind. Jailbreak community puts an idea in front of people with a crappy implemenation; Apple polishes it to the point where it can be an OS feature. I don’t know whether Apple actually pays attention to jailbreak apps, but see App Store, copy and paste, multitasking, etc…

Question:Are you optimistic about the future of the iOS platform? What features are you looking forward to next?
comex: My personal opinion: it will probably continue to beat the pants off its competitors in performance for a while yet, and Apple’s “take your time but do it right” policy on features will probably continue to make it a pleasure to use. But I’m impatient: other platforms (WebOS) have a lot of fun stuff with no real equivalent in iOS.

Question: Do you have any regrets?
comex: I should have worked on these jailbreaks more consistently, and released them more quickly; I’ve had several exploits fixed on me that could have been used in a jailbreak if I was quicker at packaging.

Question: What, besides money, made you flip to the other side?
comex: It’s not about money. A large part of my motivation to jailbreak was always the challenge; the internship will be a new sort of challenge.

Question: Will the current jailbreaks and/or the site disappear?
comex: No, I’ll hand them over to MuscleNerd or chpwn or whoever will take care of them.

Question: 1) What will you be doing as part of your internship (if you are allowed to talk about it)? 3) Your thoughts on Steve Jobs’ departure?
comex: 1) No comment. 3) Really a shame; I was hoping to meet him some day, and, company direction aside, keynotes won’t be as entertaining without him.

Question: Do you have a college degree? If so, what in?
comex: So far I’ve only had a semester of college. (I’ve been on leave for a while, but I intend to go back next year.)

Question: What made you want to jailbreak? I mean there are plenty of ways to jailbreak, so why jump in? For the experience, money?
comex: There is often (including now) no jailbreak for the latest OS version. Waiting patiently for the Dev Team is no fun :) But really, I started because I had done some Wii hacking and was curious about how the iPhone worked. I was pretty noobish back then…

Question: whats your opinion about sony, geohotz and the anonymous debacle
comex: I’m disappointed they settled, although of course it was the rational thing for geohot to do.

Question: I appreciate all of your hard work. Do you feel as if you are taken advantage of? Do you feel like your work is appreciated? Please don’t stop working on new jailbreaks, my idevices wouldn’t be the same.
comex: With 179,000 followers, I can hardly complain about appreciation :)
