GeoHots Closes First Round Of Donation Raised To Fight Against Sony

by casey on February 21, 2011

GeoHots has updated his blog which says that First round of donations is closed. The young hacker GeoHot has previously asked for donation to fund his legal fees to fight against Sony. If you are unaware, Sony has sued him for jailbreaking PlayStation 3 console firmware 3.55. The donation was given to him via PayPal by his followers. Today he has closed the first round of donations.

This is what he has posted on his blog:

Thank you so so much for all of your help, things are looking up money wise.
Expect to see a few more lawyers on my responses!
I have enough to cover my legal fees for the time being.
And in the absolute worst case scenario, we don’t want Sony getting it :-P

For now, the best thing you can do is spread the word
Let people know how Sony treats customers
Let people know Sony would rather sue than be proactive and try to fix the problem
Let people know about laws like the DMCA which stifle innovation, and don’t do anything to fix the problems they were created to solve

I will keep this blog updated as the case develops.

GeoHotz hacker George Hotz jailbreak

We are unaware of the exact amount GeoHot get through this donation, it is obvious that the amount was enough fulfill his legal need currently. It is clear that he will be asking for more donation as he has used the word ‘first round’.

Let us see whether GeoHot get the same response when he will be asking for donations again. At the moment he is concentrating to get some good lawyers to strengthen his case.
