Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo and now the Ginger Bread is going to be the next major version of the Android operating system by Google. Previously it was expected that next big version Ginger Bread would be the version 3.0 of Google Android OS. Recent updates shows that Ginger Bread might be refereed to as Android 2.3.

According to an anonymous Google Engineer in code.google.com forum: “Yes, Android 2.3 is a “major release”, and this patch will be available then.

On the other hand we can see Android OS Ginger Bread Man showing up in the Mountain View at Google HQ. The statue shows that Ginger Bread could be the major version as confirmed by the Google Engineer. Although we cannot say anything with surety as they any official statement is yet to be announced.

Google gave some very interesting names to its Android OS versions previously. Android 1.5 refereed to as Cupcake, Android 1.6 refereed to as Donut, Android 2.0 as Eclair, Android 2.2 as Froyo.

More interesting names for upcoming versions are yet to come as Android 3.5 is codenamed as Honeycomb and version 4 is codenamed Ice Cream.
